In Hancock County, Ohio, the spirit of community collaboration and support thrives through the efforts of dedicated Parent Mentors Claire McCumber and Theresa Reed Foley. These remarkable women, representing the Hancock County Educational Service Center and the city of Findlay, Ohio, recently joined forces with the local organization Addaptco to co-host a sensational Sensory-Friendly Santa Event.
Addaptco, an organization comprising special needs parents, teachers, and local entities serving on its board, is committed to creating inclusive environments for families. What sets them apart is their advocacy for special needs children and their unique approach in fostering partnerships within the community. One such partnership is with the dynamic duo, Claire and Theresa.
The Sensory-Friendly Santa Event, a joint venture between Parent Mentors and Addaptco, drew numerous families seeking a festive and inclusive experience. Sensory-friendly events are specially designed to accommodate individuals with sensory sensitivities, such as those with autism spectrum disorders or other sensory processing challenges. These events typically incorporate modifications to create a more comfortable and supportive environment, addressing factors like noise, lighting, and crowds that can be overwhelming for individuals with sensory differences.
Hot chocolate, cookies, and a craft activity were offered to all attendees, ensuring a warm and inviting atmosphere. However, the real magic happened in the details designed to accommodate sensory sensitivities, making the event truly enjoyable for all. Quiet corners, subdued lighting, and minimal noise were integral components of the event, allowing families to participate in the festivities without sensory overload.
During this event, Claire and Theresa took the opportunity to share information about the Parent Mentor Program with attending families. As Parent Mentors, their mission extends beyond individual support. It encompasses community engagement and collaboration to create a network of assistance for families navigating the challenges of special needs.
This Sensory-Friendly Santa Event not only showcased the dedication of Claire and Theresa to the Parent Mentor Program but also highlighted the success of partnerships with organizations like Addaptco. Both Parent Mentors worked closely with the organization and contributed to the planning and execution of events.
Thank you to Claire and Theresa for your collaborative efforts to ensure the family support network extends far beyond the boundaries of individual schools but encompasses the entire community.
