The survey team at Ohio State University is looking forward to collecting data from parents and caregivers through the Special Education Family Survey again this year. On Monday, March 4th, Districts/Community Schools participating in Cohort 5 received instructions for disseminating the survey to parents/caregivers of children receiving special education services. You can find the list of participating districts/community schools HERE.
The survey will be open between March 5 and May 7, 2024. If you are working with a district/community school participating in the survey this year, please be sure that the families you contact are aware that the survey is open and that they have been allowed to complete the survey.
If you have any questions or suggestions for improving future survey procedures, please contact the team at OhioFamilySurvey@osu.edu.
To graduate with a regular diploma, students in the classes of 2023 and beyond must follow a typical pathway to meet Ohio’s graduation requirements in addition to any requirements adopted by their district of residence for the student’s four-year graduation cohort. The Students with IEPs Graduation Decision-Making Tool will assist an IEP Team to answer these two questions: (1) Has the student with an IEP followed a typical pathway to meet graduation requirements? (2) When must the student with an IEP exit secondary school? Guidance and tools can be accessed at the Students with IEPs and Graduation webpage.
House Bill 33 of the 135th General Assembly included several important updates to Ohio’s dyslexia support laws, most notably: (1) Professional Development (Ohio Revised Code 3319.077) and (2) Dyslexia Screening (ORC 3323.251). Learn more about this new legislation and its impact on your districts by viewing the Dyslexia Supports webpage.
The 134th Ohio General Assembly passed HB 554, expanding the definition of “child with a disability” as it pertains to the developmental delay disability category. Children in preschool identified as having a developmental delay disability in special education no longer need to be reevaluated in advance of turning age six or moving to kindergarten. Guidance for schools regarding preschool special education students now is available on the Preschool Special Education webpage.
The Individuals with Disabilities Act of 2004 requires state education agencies and local school districts to provide a variety of data and information to the US Department of Education. To address specific requirements, Ohio’s school districts and community schools send surveys to families of students with individualized education programs (IEPs).
This annual survey is designed to assist in understanding parents’ and caregivers’ perceptions related to their involvement in their children’s educations and provides important information that can further inform family engagement efforts by schools, districts, state support teams and the Ohio Department of Education. Indicator 8 is one question on the survey that measures the percentage of parents with a child receiving special education services who report that schools facilitated parent involvement as a means of improving services and results for children with disabilities.
Learn more about how to invite families to participate and the lists of districts and schools on the Indicator 8 webpage.
