Parent Mentors Kelly Butler, Christina Hemberger, Patty Restaine, Jackie Ralph led these initiatives, ensuring event not only brought together Parent Mentors but also welcomed families from various counties across the state of Ohio.

The Halloween “Unskate” party is a unique celebration designed for individuals with disabilities and their families. What sets this event apart is its commitment to inclusivity, as it is completely free of charge for all attendees. The essence of the Unskate party lies in skating without barriers. Wheelchairs, walkers, and even shoes are all welcome, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can fully participate in the fun.

This year’s Unskate party surpassed all expectations, with a staggering attendance of more than 275 individuals. The enthusiasm and joy radiating from the crowd were palpable, creating an atmosphere of pure delight. One of the standout features of the event was the involvement of the Akron Roller Derby roller girls, who took the initiative to push children around in wheelchairs. Their spirited participation added an extra layer of excitement, proving that inclusivity and creativity can truly elevate any celebration.

The Unskate party has become a yearly tradition that continues to grow, both in scale and impact. With each passing year, the Portage County Parent Mentors manage to create an environment where everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can revel in the Halloween spirit.

In addition to the Unskate party, the Portage County Parent Mentors actively participated in the Portage County Board of Developmental Disabilities Trunk or Treat event.
