Navigating Medicaid, waivers, and the many levels of care available to individuals with disabilities can feel overwhelming for families. Recognizing this challenge as they hear recurring questions on these topics from the families they serve, Parent Mentors from Regions 2 and 3 in North Central and Northeast Ohio combined their efforts and resources to host a powerful learning event featuring Gary Tonks, President and CEO, and David Lewis, Executive Vice President, of The Arc of Ohio.

The presentation, “Supporting Ohioans: Developmental Disabilities, Home Care, and OhioRISE,” offered families and educators an in-depth look at funding and the chance to ask questions. Gary covered State Plan Medicaid benefits, OhioRISE services for youth with behavioral health needs, Home and Community-Based Waivers, Nursing and Developmental Disabilities Levels of Care, and more.
Around 40 attendees participated, many sharing their personal experiences accessing services for their loved ones. The session highlighted just how much information families are expected to navigate, and how much they appreciate clear, coordinated guidance.
The following are quotes from attendees, showcasing the value of collaborative effort among Parent Mentors and partnerships with organizations like The Arc of Ohio.

Christy, Parent and Advocate
“I walked into this session thinking I had a solid grasp on Medicaid and waivers. By the end, I realized how much more there is to know. The presenters broke everything down with clarity and compassion, and I left with practical steps to support my children as they enter adulthood. I feel more confident, more prepared, and incredibly grateful to have attended.”

Sonia, Educator and Family Member
“After nearly three decades in special education, I assumed I had seen the full landscape. This workshop reminded me that there is always more to learn. I now have a stronger foundation to guide students and families as they plan for life beyond school. This experience was eye-opening and deeply appreciated.”
This event not only maximized resources across regions in Ohio, but also ensured families received high-quality, accessible information on a topic that affects every stage of life for individuals with disabilities. Their teamwork exemplifies the power of Parent Mentors in helping families make informed, confident decisions for their children’s futures.
