Allison Small, Parent Mentor for Gallia County Local Schools, continues to make a lasting impact in her community through her leadership and support. In September, Allison coordinated the annual Special Skills Sports/Rio Grande Invitational, a track and field event held at the University of Rio Grande. The event was a collaboration between the Special Skills Sports Camps and the University, bringing together students with disabilities for a day of athleticism, inclusion, and celebration.

“This is one of the most rewarding things I do as a Parent Mentor,” said Allison. “As a Parent Mentor, I serve as a bridge between families and schools, helping to build trust, communication, and collaboration. Our community thrives when there is strong communication and mutual respect between schools and families.”

The track events included a 35m Assisted Walk, 35m Wheelchair, 50m Dash, 50m Walk, 100m Dash, and 200m Dash, while the field events included softball throw, shot put, standing long jump, and running long jump.

Although the Special Skills Event showcased impressive athleticism among participants, it’s more than a sports day. It’s a movement toward inclusion and empowerment. Families from across the region gathered to cheer on their children and connect with others who share similar experiences.

“For families, the Special Skills Event offers hope, community, and belonging,” Allison shared. “It provides a space where parents and caregivers feel seen, supported, and connected with others who understand their journey.”

The event also plays a vital role in shifting societal attitudes. “Most importantly, the Special Skills Event helps challenge stereotypes, raise awareness, and promote inclusion,” Allison said. “It shows the world what people with disabilities can do, not just what they can’t.”

Thanks to Allison’s dedication and the support of the University of Rio Grande, the event was a resounding success, laying the foundation for future opportunities that celebrate ability, resilience, and community.
