On October 17, 2024, Region 14’s State Support Team and Hopewell Center hosted their annual Parent Conference for Families of Children with Disabilities in Hillsboro, Ohio. Families from Adams, Brown, Clinton, Fayette, and Highland counties gathered at the Hopewell Center to learn more about mental health and wellness, gaining tools to support both their children and themselves.

This event was organized by Family and Community Engagement Consultant Amy Luttrell, along with Parent Mentors Linda Klump (Highland County), Carla Brown (Adams County), and Pam Thornburg (Fayette County). Experts from the Greene County Educational Service Center led presentations on mental health topics, providing families with information on handling stress, building resilience, and caring for themselves as they care for their children.

“The annual Parent Conference was a wonderful evening of families coming together to learn about Mental Health and Wellness. The family members always enjoy networking and discussing important topics,” Luttrell shared. The conference gave attendees not only practical advice but also a sense of community as they connected with others facing similar challenges.

Why Mental Health and Wellness Matter for Families

For parents of children with disabilities, taking care of their own mental health is essential. Navigating the special education journey can be exhausting, and focusing on wellness can help parents and caregivers avoid burnout, manage stress, and keep a positive environment for their kids. By learning and practicing self-care and stress management, parents and caregivers can focus on how best to support their children.

The Importance of Working with Schools and Support Centers

This event also highlighted the importance of families, schools, and educational support centers working together. These partnerships give families access to more resources, like mental health support and community services. They also help make sure that children with disabilities get the support they need both at school and at home, creating a stable environment where they can grow and succeed.
