Joy Howard, Parent Mentor for Cleveland Heights–University Heights, is a proud mother of five children whose advocacy journey has touched many. She recently shared her story through two films that highlight the realities of caregiving and the importance of inclusive community spaces.

Joy contributed to the PBS documentary Caregiving, executive produced by Bradley Cooper, which brings audiences into the daily experiences of family and professional caregivers across the United States. The film explores the joys, challenges, and resilience that define caregiving, while also examining the history and evolution of America’s care system. By adding her voice, Joy helps bring national awareness to the often-unseen work of caregivers and the need for stronger systems of support. She is also featured in Worshipping Together, a short film that spotlights an inclusive church service in Cleveland, Ohio.  Created by Patricia Parker and Salina Miller, the Rhythm of Life Kingdom Inclusion Ministry faith community welcomes caregivers and care recipients into a space where all can fully participate, regardless of ability.

For Joy, whose son Drakkar has autism, finding a place of worship where her child feels accepted and free to express himself has been deeply meaningful.

“This place of worship has been so supportive of the way my son worships,” Joy shared. “Whether it’s standing in the back, whether it’s sitting on a beanbag, just moving back and forth. He has the freedom to be himself there.”

Both films are part of larger national efforts to center the voices of caregivers and families. Caregiving is a PBS documentary series available through the Well Beings initiative of WETA television, while Worshipping Together shines a light on how inclusive practices can transform faith communities.

Joy hosted premier viewing events for both films, and the community came out to show their love and support for Joy’s advocacy efforts and bravery in sharing her story to inspire others.

Through her work as a Parent Mentor, advocacy with Exceptional Children’s Advocacy Group, and her willingness to share her personal story, Joy Howard inspires greater compassion, understanding, and inclusion in every community for families of children with disabilities.
