Ohio Parent Mentor Materials

News

We are excited to announce that Cohort 3 of Special Education Family Survey is open. We would love your assistance with getting the parents/caregivers you work with to complete the survey. Remember that this is a federal requirement that every school district/community school participates in the survey once every six years. The list of districts/community schools included in Cohort 3 are listed below. The survey will be open between March 8 and May 6, 2022.

The invitation to participate along with translated versions of the invitation (Arabic, Nepali, Somali, Chinese, and Spanish) can be found here and enter the password, 2022

Based on our analysis of the previous years’ data, we do not anticipate having adequate representation of the perspective of Black parents. To address that, we have provided a video from a culture broker (our own Dr. Kenyona Walker) to encourage Black families, in particular, to participate in the survey. Feel free to share the video along with the general invitation. To access the video, click here and enter the password, 2022. The invitation has a link and QR code where parents or guardians can access the survey. It should only take them about 10 minutes to complete.

Parent Mentor Lead Committees

Skills and Knowledge Committee

A sub-committee of the Parent Mentors of Ohio Council, Skills and Knowledge Committee (S&K) is a group of Parent Mentors who have volunteered to offer their skills, knowledge and talents to new and seasoned PM’s. The S & K team helps with planning and maintaining the PMO website, works with partners to contribute to New PM Orientation, the Spring Conference and any other task assigned by PMO Council. Parent Mentors possess, as a group and individually, a unique knowledge base. We serve families and districts in individualized ways.

Our life experience as a parent of a child with special needs has prepared us and informed our approach, helping others as partners, to educate Ohio’s Exceptional Children. The Skills and Knowledge Committee mission is to find resources and items of concern, interest and need, supplying the Parent Mentors with the information they need to be successful mentors of families of students with disabilities, technical assistance to educators and a partner to community agencies. Anyone who is an Ohio Parent Mentor is welcome to join the group. If you would like more information or would like to volunteer for S&K, please contact Jacqueline Howley at 937.484.1557 Ext 108 or jacqueline.howley@mccesc.org

Care and Support Committee

We are a committee of Parent Mentors from all over the state of Ohio who has volunteered to mentor new Parent Mentors. Each new Parent Mentor is paired with a Parent Mentor from the committee. The role of Parent Mentor is unique in each school district and ESC, and our goal is to provide mentorship to all new Parent Mentors for at least the first year (or as long as requested). Mentorship can be provided by phone, email, in person, or via zoom meeting. Care and Support will work with you to develop a support plan; just let us know your needs. We are also here to help support existing Parent Mentors as needed through networking and support. If you would like more information or would like to volunteer for C&S, please contact Stacey Hartwig at 330.644.0699 or at shartwig@coventryschools.org.
